NDC Resolves To Build Party As An Institution, Not A ‘Personality Cult

The National Executive Committee (NEC) of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has approved a series of resolutions aimed at entrenching party supremacy, financial accountability and internal cohesion, the party announced on Sunday.

In a press statement issued by the Office of the National Publicity Secretary, signed by Osa Director on 7th June 2026, the NDC declared its commitment to building “a strong and enduring institution” in which the party – not any individual – remains supreme.

Under the new directives, all programmes, policies and appointments (with the exception of personal staff) of any government elected on the NDC platform must be made in consultation with the party structure. The statement stressed: “The party remains supreme, and members are expected to align their personal interests and agendas with those of the party.”

Affiliated groups and non‑governmental organisations (NGOs) must now operate under the “guidance and control” of the party and are prohibited from functioning independently or in parallel with its structures.

A comprehensive Code of Conduct for all party officials and candidates is to be drawn up by a committee chaired by the National Legal Adviser.

The NEC also inaugurated a National Reconciliation Committee tasked with reconciling aggrieved members, signalling a push for unity ahead of future electoral contests.

Perhaps the most striking resolution was the party’s explicit rejection of personality‑driven politics. “The NDC is being built as an institution, not a personality cult, political movement, or Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) to be used and discarded,” the statement read. Members were urged to remain committed to the party’s long‑term growth “for generations to come”.

On financial probity, the NEC resolved to enforce strict accountability in the management of party resources. Party funds must be used exclusively for party business, and candidates at all levels – local government, state, zonal and national – must fully disclose all monies sourced or received, including contributions made to campaign accounts.

Such funds must be channelled through dedicated party campaign accounts, including presidential and governorship campaign accounts where applicable.

“The total allegiance of all candidates and aspirants must be to the party and the national interest,” the statement concluded.
