The Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC) has moved to quash reports circulating – both in traditional media and on social media – suggesting the party is actively courting specific individuals to stand in upcoming elections.
The clarification comes following misleading posts originating from a fake account impersonating the NDC on X (formerly Twitter).
In a statement released today, signed by National Secretary Barr. Ikenna Morgan Enekweizu, the NDC explicitly denied lobbying any candidate.
The party highlighted a rogue X account, mimicking the official verified handle (@NigerianNDCHQ) in colour and branding, as the source of the inaccurate claims.
“We have previously alerted the public to the existence of this fraudulent account and reiterate our complete disassociation from any content posted by it,” the statement read.
“While we acknowledge the account may be run by an overzealous supporter, we must stress that its pronouncements do not represent official NDC policy.”
The NDC urged both the media and the public to verify information solely through the official, verified X handle: @NigeriaNDCHQ.
Despite the need to address the misinformation, the party expressed gratitude for the “overwhelming support” received since its recent formation.
Crucially, the NDC has issued an open invitation to all Nigerians wishing to contribute to positive change and strengthen multi-party democracy to join its ranks.
The appeal specifically encourages women and people with disabilities to become involved, stating the NDC is “a party for all.”
“The NDC is an ideologically driven party, dedicated to the service of Nigeria and its citizens,” concluded the statement.
“We welcome registrations from Nigerians both within the country and abroad.”
