The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) and China’s National Immigration Administration have explored options for stronger technical cooperation, intelligence sharing, and capacity building to combat irregular migration, document fraud, and transnational organised crime.
Discussions took place during a bilateral meeting between the Comptroller-General of Immigration, Kemi Nandap, and officials of the National Immigration Administration of China on September 9, held on the sidelines of the Sub-Forum on Migration Management Cooperation in Lianyungang, Jiangsu Province.
The international forum, held from September 8 to 11, brought together over 2,000 participants from 139 countries and organisations to deliberate on international cooperation in migration management.
According to a statement issued on Sunday by NIS Public Relations Officer, Deputy Comptroller of Immigration Akinsola Akinlabi, the bilateral meeting focused on topics of mutual interest and opportunities to deepen collaboration. Proposed areas of cooperation include technical exchanges, information sharing, and joint capacity-building initiatives.
The forum featured country presentations on migration policy alongside parallel sessions addressing smart digital services, foreign administration, document verification technology, and intelligence sharing.
The NIS participated actively in the session on advancing document verification and intelligence sharing, contributing to a roundtable discussion on Nigeria’s role in combating document fraud and record falsification. The Service highlighted its ongoing efforts to strengthen document security—a critical step in preventing identity-related crimes, facilitating legitimate travel, and disrupting criminal networks.
Participation at the forum reaffirmed the NIS’s commitment to strengthening international partnerships for secure borders and effective migration management.
