The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) and its Managing Director, Dr. Samuel Ogbuku, have been awarded the prestigious “Interventionist Agency of the Year” title by Vanguard Newspapers.
The award was presented at the 2025 Vanguard Personality of the Year Awards held at Eko Hotels and Suites in Lagos.
The recognition celebrates a significant turnaround for the NDDC, acknowledging Dr. Ogbuku’s leadership in transforming the Commission into a more focused, efficient, and impactful organization.
For years, the NDDC faced criticism regarding project delays and lack of tangible results. However, the Vanguard Award Committee highlighted the demonstrable progress made under Dr. Ogbuku’s direction.
“This recognition reflects a reformed and responsive NDDC, an institution now defined by delivery, accountability, and a clear commitment to sustainable development in the Niger Delta,” the committee stated in its citation.
Key achievements cited included the completion of previously stalled road and bridge projects, restoring connectivity and boosting economic activity across several Niger Delta states.
The Commission’s renewed focus on electricity infrastructure, with projects in Ondo and Edo States bringing power back to communities after years of outages, was also lauded.
The NDDC’s innovative “Light Up the Niger Delta” initiative, deploying thousands of solar-powered streetlights, was praised for enhancing security, supporting local businesses, and providing sustainable energy solutions.
Furthermore, the revitalised Foreign Post-Graduate Scholarship Programme and investments in local digital learning resources were highlighted as significant contributions to human capital development.
Speaking at the ceremony, former Minister of State for Petroleum Resources and Chairman of the event, Mr. Odein Ajomugobia, emphasized the importance of recognizing individuals and organizations shaping Nigeria’s future.
Vanguard Editor, Mr. Eze Anaba, echoed this sentiment, stating the awards celebrated those who “defied the odds” and inspired the nation.
Dr. Ogbuku, accepting the award, described it as a “call to greater service” and reaffirmed the NDDC’s dedication to sustainable development and inclusive growth in the Niger Delta region.
He attributed the success to the collective efforts of the NDDC Board, Management, and stakeholders.
