Egypt Goalkeeper Faces Four-Match Ban After Striking Referee, Threatens World Cup Preparation

Al-Ahly and Egypt national team goalkeeper Mohamed El-Shenawy is facing a significant spell on the sidelines after receiving a four-match ban and a substantial fine for his conduct following Tuesday’s 1-1 draw with Ceramica Cleopatra in the Egyptian Premier League. The incident, which occurred in added time, saw the 37-year-old, who was on the bench for the match, confront the referee and reportedly strike him on the head.

The controversy arose after Al-Ahly were denied a penalty appeal for a perceived handball in the penalty area during the closing stages of the game. Frustrated by the decision, El-Shenawy reportedly ran onto the pitch and made physical contact with the referee. While the league statement described the action as “assaulting the referee by pushing or pulling,” video footage circulating online suggests a more forceful interaction.

The Egyptian Premier League swiftly responded, issuing a statement detailing the punishment: “A four-match ban and a fine of 50,000 Egyptian pounds (£700) for assaulting the referee by pushing or pulling.” The ban is a significant setback for both Al-Ahly and El-Shenawy himself, sidelining the experienced goalkeeper until the final week of the league’s play-offs.

El-Shenawy is a pivotal figure for both club and country. He was Egypt’s first-choice goalkeeper at the recent 2025 Africa Cup of Nations and is widely expected to be named in the Pharaohs’ squad for the upcoming FIFA World Cup in North America this summer. This suspension throws his World Cup preparation into doubt, potentially impacting his match fitness and sharpness leading up to the tournament.

“This is a deeply unfortunate situation for everyone involved,” commented former Egyptian international Ahmed Hassan on a local sports programme. “El-Shenawy is a leader, and his experience will be sorely missed. But his actions were unacceptable, and the league had to respond. The bigger concern now is how this impacts his World Cup chances. He needs game time, and four matches is a considerable absence.”

On the league front, the ban comes at a crucial time for defending champions Al-Ahly. Currently sitting in third place with 41 points after one match in the Championship round – where the league’s top seven teams compete – they trail league leaders Zamalek by five points. The loss of their captain and experienced goalkeeper will undoubtedly be felt as Al-Ahly attempt to close the gap and retain their title.

Al-Ahly’s next four matches will be without their key shot-stopper, forcing coach Marcel Koller to rely on backup options. The incident has sparked debate amongst fans and pundits alike, with many questioning the refereeing decisions that led to El-Shenawy’s outburst, while others condemn his reaction. The focus now shifts to how Al-Ahly will cope with his absence and whether El-Shenawy can regain his form and secure his place in the Egypt squad before the World Cup begins.
