The Labour Party’s presidential candidate in 2023, Peter Obi, has voiced deep concern regarding the recent decision by the United States to evacuate staff from its embassy in Nigeria, describing the move as a worrying sign of deteriorating security and diminishing international confidence in the country.
In a strongly worded statement published on his social media channels, Obi warned that the situation should be treated as a national emergency, especially given Nigeria’s efforts to attract foreign investment.
He pointed out that the country currently ranks fourth on the Global Terrorism Index, yet continues to experience escalating violence, loss of life, and ongoing threats to communities.
He criticised what he characterised as a failure of governance, arguing that political manoeuvring has been prioritised over the safety and wellbeing of citizens.
According to Obi, the US directive reflects growing international apprehension about Nigeria’s precarious security situation.
Obi also drew attention to reports of the killing of a senior military officer in Borno State, citing it as further evidence of the perilous conditions faced by both civilians and security personnel.
He lamented the fact that many Nigerians are now unable to live, work, worship, or travel safely, warning that such an environment is detrimental to national development and investor confidence.
Reiterating that the primary duty of any government is to protect lives and property, Obi acknowledged that years of leadership failings have placed immense strain on the nation’s armed forces, who continue to make significant sacrifices.
Drawing a historical parallel, he likened the current political class to Nero, accusing leaders of being preoccupied with politics while the country struggles with deepening insecurity.
He cautioned that without safety and stability, there would be no nation left to govern, nor a future to compete for in political office.
