Family Demand Investigation Into Death Of Army Lieutenant, Accuse Military Of Neglect

The family of the late Lieutenant Jude Osondu Ude are demanding a full and transparent investigation into his death, alleging a cover-up and systemic failings within the Nigerian Army. Lt. Ude was fatally stabbed on March 15th, 2026, within the 17 Garrison Brigade in Katsina, and died a week later from his injuries.

In a strongly worded press statement released on Saturday, the family, represented by solicitor Sir Ifeanyi Ejiofor Esq., called on Defence Minister General Christopher Musa (Retd.), Chief of Army Staff Lieutenant-General Waidi Shaibu, and Chief of Defence General Olufemi Oluyode to launch an “uncompromising” inquiry.

They fear internal sabotage, rivalry, and complicity may have played a role in the young officer’s untimely demise.

The statement, titled “Blood within the Barracks: when duty is betrayed and honour abandoned – the tragic, untold demise of a young soldier”, paints a damning picture of neglect following Lt. Ude’s death.

The family alleges the military offered no support with funeral arrangements, forcing his father – a retired soldier himself – was left to bear the financial burden of transporting his son’s body from Katsina to Enugu, paying ₦750,000.00 for the transport alone, plus an additional ₦50,000.00 for logistics, ₦20,000.00 for food, ₦25,000.00 for mortuary services, and ₦35,000.00 for an ambulance.

The Nigerian Military, they state, provided no financial assistance
“It is a national embarrassment of the highest order that the remains of this fallen soldier were abandoned by the very institution he served with unwavering loyalty,” the statement reads.

Furthermore, the family were dismayed by the lack of military presence at Lt. Ude’s funeral on Easter Sunday, April 5th, 2026. No ceremonial guard, final salute, or even representatives from the nearby 82 Division in Enugu were present.

“He was buried, quite literally, as though he had never worn the uniform,” the statement continues, adding that Lt. Ude may have received more honour in death had he been a member of a civilian organisation.

The family are deeply concerned by what they describe as “growing whispers of internal sabotage” within the military, and insist that those responsible for Lt. Ude’s death, and the subsequent lack of support for his family, must be held accountable.

They have given the military hierarchy fourteen days to begin a “meaningful” investigation, warning they will pursue all legal avenues to compel accountability if no action is taken.

“A nation that fails to honour its fallen heroes does more than betray the dead, it imperils the living,” the statement concludes.

Lt. Ude, a Master’s degree holder, was described as a “fearless, disciplined, and uncompromising” officer who had been serving with the 17 Brigade in Katsina.

The family believe his dedication to duty may have “unsettled certain shadowy interests within the system.” While initial reports suggested an ambush, the family claim the truth is “far more sinister.”
