Senator Henry Seriake Dickson, national leader of the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC), has hit back at claims made by Dr. Umar Ardo, describing them as “misguided and sponsored propaganda.”
The Senator, speaking today, expressed his disappointment at Dr. Ardo’s criticisms, noting their long-standing friendship and previous political alliance.
“It is frankly shocking,” Senator Dickson stated, “that Dr. Ardo would consistently propagate misinformation about the NDC, particularly given my role as its founder and national leader. It demonstrates a regrettable lack of respect and loyalty.”
The Senator detailed the NDC’s journey to registration, explaining that the initial application was lodged in 2017, predating Dr. Ardo’s own attempts to register a political party.
He explained that the process was initially stalled due to a moratorium placed on new party registrations by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), under the leadership of Dr. Mahmood Yakubu.
“Following the lifting of that embargo last year, we revived our application and were listed amongst 171 associations,” Senator Dickson continued. “However, INEC subsequently declined our application, citing similarities between our proposed logo – a two-finger sign – and the All Progressives Congress’ (APC) broom symbol.”
The NDC challenged this decision in court, arguing the logos were distinct. The court ultimately ruled in favour of the NDC, compelling INEC to register the party, a directive which INEC has since complied with.
“INEC has not appealed this judgement, and the period for doing so has now passed,” Senator Dickson emphasised. “No one, save for INEC itself, has the standing to challenge this ruling.”
He further confirmed that INEC officials observed the NDC’s inaugural National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting, confirming the party’s officers and outlining plans for upcoming congresses and primaries.
Senator Dickson acknowledged Dr. Ardo’s own frustrations with INEC’s handling of his party’s registration, the Advancement Democratic Alliance (ADA), stating he had offered advice and encouragement.
He stressed, however, that the NDC bears no responsibility for Dr. Ardo’s current difficulties, which he attributed to internal disputes within the ADA.
He also pointed to the recent registration of the New Democratic Party (NDP), also following a successful court challenge, noting that this case received no similar criticism from Dr. Ardo.
“The NDC is gaining significant momentum, with Nigerians at home and abroad registering in large numbers,” Senator Dickson declared. “We are receiving support from politicians across the political spectrum.”
Senator Dickson reiterated his disappointment at Dr. Ardo’s actions, suggesting they were “inimical to the fragile opposition ecosystem we are striving to strengthen.”
He affirmed the NDC’s commitment to transparent and honourable politics, and invited all Nigerians seeking a new political platform to join their ranks.
