Peter Obi, Anya Ndi Igbo Pay Tribute As Obi Of Onitsha Celebrates 85th Birthday

Nigeria’s foremost traditional ruler, His Majesty Igwe Nnaemeka Alfred Achebe (Agbogidi), the 21st Obi of Onitsha, marked his 85th birthday on Thursday, 14 May 2026, drawing warm tributes from political leaders and cultural organisations alike.

Presidential aspirant for the 2027 election, Mr Peter Obi, took to his X (formerly Twitter) handle to congratulate the monarch, describing him as “a shining symbol of dignity, intellect, humility and westernised service”.

Obi praised the Obi’s reign for demonstrating that traditional institutions remain “vital pillars for peace, moral leadership, cultural preservation, and national development”.

“The Obi of Onitsha’s life remains a strong reminder that leadership is about character, discipline, compassion, and service to humanity,” Mr Obi wrote.

He noted that in an era of challenged values, the monarch stands as “a moral compass and a bridge between tradition and modern nation-building”.

Separately, the non-partisan socio-political group Anya-Ndi-Igbo issued a lengthy tribute hailing the monarch’s “eight decades and a half of the glorious sojourn on earth”.

The group highlighted his mental alertness and physical fitness at 85 as “an extraordinary blessing from God”. They also commended his 24-year reign – during which he has positively redefined royalty – and his efforts to place the annual Ofala festival on the global cultural calendar.

The organisation singled out the Obi’s devotion to education, noting his establishment of a manpower development trust fund for his community early in his reign.

“It is your abiding faith in education as a fundamental factor in national development and your philosophy that lack of funds should not prevent any child from acquiring a good education,” the tribute read.

They recalled his education at Stanford and Columbia universities, two of America’s most prestigious institutions, as informing his cosmopolitan worldview.

Igwe Nnaemeka Alfred Achebe, a former director in the Royal Dutch Shell Group, ascended the throne of Onitsha in 2002. Both tributes concluded with prayers for his continued good health and wisdom as he serves humanity.
