A fresh political storm has erupted after the presidential candidate of the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, revealed that he fears for his life in a chilling interview that surfaced on Wednesday.
The former Anambra State governor claimed he is being deliberately obstructed by the government, warning bluntly: “The way they are going now, I might not be alive.”
Obi alleged that the administration is frustrating “every single thing I do for a living,” adding that while the intimidation may not always be direct, “you could see their hand in eventually everything.”
He stopped short of providing specific examples but insisted that even benefits and privileges he is legally entitled to have been withheld.
His fears were met with a blistering defence from a prominent supporter, Mr. Mc Tagwaye, who issued a terse statement to the media on Thursday. In it, he questioned the ruling party’s fixation on Obi with an unmistakably sharp tone:
“Nothing should happen to a single hair of Peter Obi. He’s a Nigerian and he reserves every right to contest, vote and be voted for. Why is the ruling party fixated on one man, just one man? If you’re popular and your so-called ‘work’ you’ve done should speak for you before Nigerians, why this degree of DESPERATION?”
The statement, written in all caps for emphasis, signalled growing anger among opposition supporters who believe the administration is using state machinery to silence dissenting voices – allegations the government has repeatedly denied.
Obi’s remarks come at a time of heightened political tension, with several opposition figures accusing the government of weaponising institutions against them.
The NDC candidate’s latest claims, however, are among the most direct: he said he is “being attacked personally” and that the pattern of events suggests coordination, not coincidence.
Neither the presidency nor the ruling party has responded to Mc Tagwaye’s statement or Obi’s allegations at the time of filing this report.
As pressure mounts, many are looking to security agencies to ensure that the former governor’s fears – and his supporter’s warning – are not left to echo into tragedy.
