Some men merely pass through their generation; others leave footprints so deep that their lives become part of the history of their time. Mazi Sam Ohuabunwa, recipient of several distinguished awards and a National Honour, belongs to the latter category.
As he celebrates another birthday, we celebrate not only a distinguished pharmacist and entrepreneur, but also an uncommon son of Arochukwu whose accomplishments have transcended his profession, his community and national boundaries.
Throughout an illustrious career, Mazi Ohuabunwa has demonstrated that professional training can be a platform for extraordinary achievement. Beginning in pharmacy, he ventured into entrepreneurship, industry, corporate leadership and national affairs, emerging as one of Nigeria’s foremost advocates of pharmapreneurship.
His journey has expanded the possibilities open to the Nigerian pharmacist. He has demonstrated that a pharmacist can become an industrialist, an employer of labour, a corporate strategist, a boardroom leader, an economic thinker and a statesman.
His decision to contest the presidency of Nigeria further reflected his commitment to national service. Rather than merely criticising the challenges confronting the country, he offered himself for the responsibility of helping to address them—a demonstration of courage and civic conviction.
Yet beyond the titles, businesses and public engagements is the man himself.
