The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) governorship candidate for Delta State’s 2027 election, Deacon Chris Iyovwaye, has paid a glowing tribute to the former Governor of Delta State, Dr Emmanuel Eweta Uduaghan, following his passing.
In an official press statement released on Monday, Deacon Iyovwaye expressed profound sadness over the loss, describing the late elder statesman as an esteemed “elder brother” with whom he shared a personal relationship built on a foundation of profound mutual respect.
Reflecting on Dr Uduaghan’s lengthy tenure in public service, Deacon Iyovwaye highlighted his notable political career, which included serving as the Secretary to the State Government (SSG) before ultimately governing Delta State between 2007 and 2015.
He commended the late governor’s visionary leadership, particularly emphasising the landmark “Delta Beyond Oil” initiative aimed at diversifying the state’s economy away from oil dependence.
The NDC standard-bearer also lauded Dr Uduaghan’s immense contributions to healthcare, education, infrastructure, and human capital development across the state, noting that his legacy remains an indelible part of Delta State’s historic journey.
“Beyond politics, he was a medical doctor, a leader, and a proud son of Delta State who dedicated a significant part of his life to serving our people,” Iyovwaye stated, adding that their personal bond transcended political differences.
“Our relationship went beyond political affiliations, and I will always cherish the moments we shared, our conversations, and the mutual respect that existed between us.”
Deacon Iyovwaye extended his heartfelt condolences to the late governor’s widow, children, the wider Uduaghan family, the Itsekiri nation, and the entire populace of Delta State.
He concluded with a prayer, asking the Almighty to grant the bereaved family the fortitude to bear the painful loss and to grant eternal rest to the soul of the departed leader.
