Family Demands Fresh Police Probe Into Missing Corpse At Anambra Hospital

The family of a deceased engineer whose body allegedly vanished from a mortuary in Anambra State has formally requested the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) to order a supplementary investigation, highlighting significant gaps and inconsistencies in the initial police report.

Represented by their lawyer, Mr Joseph Offor, the family of the late Chukwunweike Okammelu petitioned the IGP regarding the disappearance of his body from the mortuary at the Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu Teaching Hospital in Amaku, Awka.

The petition, dated 6 July and copied to the Deputy Inspector-General of Police in charge of the Force Criminal Investigation Department in Abuja, follows an earlier inquiry conducted by the Intelligence Response Team (IRT).

While the IRT report acknowledged potential criminal conspiracy and systemic operational failures, it recommended the prosecution of only one mortician, Mr Clement Ogbonna.

Mr Offor argued that the report left critical questions unresolved regarding the chain of custody, the accountability of other listed suspects, and institutional oversight.

Furthermore, the family expressed dismay over the hospital management’s handling of the incident, accusing leadership of relying on flawed narratives rather than addressing the security failure transparently.

The family has urged the IGP to review the findings and direct a thorough supplementary investigation to ensure full accountability and justice.
