The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has called upon the electorate to rally behind the Peter Obi and Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso ticket in the upcoming general election, framing the vote as a crucial opportunity to halt the nation’s soaring debt trajectory.
In a press release issued on Thursday, 5th November 2026, and signed by Dr. Chiogo Constance Ikokwu, Spokesperson for the National Presidential Campaign Council, the party heavily criticised President Bola Tinubu’s latest external borrowing plans.
The statement comes in response to President Tinubu’s fresh request to the National Assembly seeking approval for an external borrowing plan of $7.7 billion (approximately ₦10.79 trillion) to help finance the 2026 budget deficit.
Dr. Ikokwu lambasted the administration’s frequent borrowing requests, characterising them as a relentless “one week, new loan” cycle. She further expressed concern over the legislature’s compliance, remarking that the executive has effectively “pocketed the National Assembly” into a rubber-stamp body.
Urging citizens not to despair over the country’s economic hardships and escalating debt burden, the NDC spokesperson pointed to recent democratic exercises abroad.
Drawing a parallel with the United States’ midterm and general elections held on November 4, 2026, Dr. Ikokwu noted that Americans facing cost-of-living pressures utilized the ballot box to register their stance rather than resigning themselves to hardship.
She called on Nigerians to emulate this civic engagement by turning out en masse on January 16, 2027, to vote for the Obi-Kwankwaso ticket, asserting that the ballot remains the ultimate instrument to rescue the nation from unsustainable debt and secure a transparent, accountable government.
