Industry leaders, urban planners, architects and engineers gathered in Nigeria for PrimeTech Day 2026, a major forum focused on tackling the growing infrastructural and environmental challenges facing the continent’s urban centres.
Organised by PrimeTech Design and Engineering, the design and engineering subsidiary of Julius Berger Nigeria PLC, the one-day event centered around the theme: Designing for the Future: Leadership, Resilience and the Cities We Need.
Addressing the rapid population growth of Lagos—home to over 22 million people—PrimeTech Lagos Manager Joseph Abba highlighted the mounting pressures of flooding, extreme heat, traffic congestion, and infrastructure deficits.
Abba stressed that good design must go beyond mere aesthetics to encompass operational efficiency, lifecycle value, and long-term functionality. “Resilience is an imperative rather than an option,” he noted, urging stakeholders to ensure today’s investments remain robust and effective for decades.
PrimeTech General Manager, Engr. Christian Moessmer, underscored the critical role of uniting architecture and engineering from the earliest phases of project development.
- “The design phase changes everything that follows,” Moessmer stated, explaining that proactive cross-functional collaboration significantly reduces costly adjustments during execution.
- He further emphasised that resilience must be treated as a core investment rather than an optional extra to safeguard communities and strengthen city infrastructure.
The forum featured extensive contributions from prominent sector experts, including keynote speaker Brig. Gen. Tunde Reis (rtd), Dr. Folayinka Dania of the Lagos State Resilience Office, Arc. Dr. Ramatu Aliyu, and PrimeTech Board Chairman Engr. Jafaru Damulak.
Discussions heavily focused on integrating smart technologies and data-driven planning into housing, transportation, and public services, as well as shifting urban development strategies to withstand environmental, economic, and social shocks.
They agreed on the vital necessity of visionary leadership to drive sustainable public-private partnerships and robust investment frameworks.
PrimeTech Day 2026 concluded with a unified pledge among participants to accelerate innovation, deepen professional collaboration, and champion human-centred design in building the sustainable cities of tomorrow.
