Veteran entertainer and self-proclaimed ‘Area Father’ Charly Boy (real name Charles Oputa) has recounted a whirlwind 24 hours spent with former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo, describing the 89-year-old as possessing an “unnatural” level of energy.
Charly Boy, promoting his upcoming memoir 999: The Memoir of CharlyBoy, travelled to Abeokuta on Friday to seek Obasanjo’s assistance with guest list management and a video endorsement for the book launch.
He described arriving to find Obasanjo’s residence teeming with well-wishers, including former Cross River State Governor Donald Duke.
“People, everywhere, crowd na water,” Charly Boy wrote in a lengthy social media post detailing the experience. “All to see the Wizard.”
But it was a subsequent journey to Ilaro, a town an hour and a half outside Abeokuta, that truly left Charly Boy astonished. He recounts being taken on a bumpy ride to inspect a construction site, enduring scorching heat alongside the President.
“The kin satanic sun wey descend on us… Baba was in dat sun for at least 40 minutes,” he wrote, clearly impressed by Obasanjo’s stamina.
The day continued with playful banter – Obasanjo reportedly teased Charly Boy for suggesting he change his attire for the video endorsement – and a surprisingly lengthy, impromptu speech from the former President about Charly Boy’s brand.
Exhausted upon his return to Lagos, Charly Boy was further floored to learn that Obasanjo had still found the energy to play squash and personally greet around 60 visitors after Charly Boy’s departure.
“The thing wey dey high me where dis man dey, na him energy,” Charly Boy marvelled. “When some of him mates dey for wheelchair… dis one still dey move like dis!”
He dismissed suggestions of witchcraft, attributing Obasanjo’s vitality to a healthy lifestyle and divine blessing. However, he couldn’t help but feel inspired – and a little challenged.
“Make una stop to dey wash my head by telling me I look good for my 70sometin yrs on earth,” he declared. “If a 89 years old still get dis kin of ginger… na him be say I never start.”
Charly Boy concluded by removing his metaphorical hat to the former President, expressing his hope to maintain similar vigour in his own later years. “Because if life carry me reach that age I pray make I still get this kind Fire 🔥.”
It seems the ‘Area Father’ has found a new role model in the form of a very active octogenarian! 999: The Memoir of CharlyBoy is due for release soon.
