In a notable development in Nigerian politics, Senator Aishatu Dahiru Ahmed Binani, a prominent figure in Adamawa State, has switched allegiance to the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).
The move, announced on Friday in Abuja, represents another significant shift in the country’s political landscape as parties jostle for position ahead of the 2027 general election.
Senator Binani, who ran as the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate for Governor of Adamawa State in 2023, was formally welcomed into the NDC by its National Leader, Senator Henry Seriake Dickson, alongside the party’s Chairman and National Working Committee.
This defection follows a previous move earlier this year, when she left the APC for the African Democratic Congress (ADC), demonstrating a period of considerable political repositioning.
Speaking at the reception, Binani explained her decision was rooted in the NDC’s constitutional framework and approach to governance. “The answer is very simple,” she stated. “Based on the NDC’s Constitution, I saw that the party prioritises structured, policy-driven governance.”
She emphasised that the wishes of her supporters were also central to her choice, asserting that their interests remain paramount. “My priority, and my first interest, is the interest of my supporters,” she said, adding that many had already joined the NDC prior to her formal announcement. She claims Adamawa State now boasts one of the highest numbers of registered NDC members.
The former Senator pledged her commitment to strengthening the party both in Adamawa and nationally, stating, “We will do our best to build this NDC back home in Adamawa State, and also contribute our quota at the national level.” She also called for fairness, transparency, and robust internal democracy within the party.
Welcoming Binani, Senator Dickson, a former Governor of Bayelsa State, described the NDC as an open and inclusive platform for Nigerians seeking alternative political options. “This party is open, inclusive, and ready to harness your energy, ideas, and strength,” he said.
Dickson immediately appointed Binani to a leadership role within the NDC in Adamawa State, handing her the “flag of leadership.” He urged her to foster unity and build consensus with existing party leaders to strengthen the party’s structures.
He also extended an invitation to women and young people across Nigeria to join the NDC, highlighting the party’s commitment to inclusivity, evidenced by the adoption of affirmative action for women at its first National Executive Committee meeting.
In a broader appeal, Dickson invited politicians dissatisfied with their current parties to consider the NDC. “Every Nigerian has the constitutional right to join any political party at any time – and to leave at any time,” he stated.
He used the analogy of changing vehicles, saying, “If the vehicle you boarded is no longer taking you to your destination, you have every right to step down and board a better one. The NDC is that better vehicle.”
Senator Binani remains a well-known political figure in Adamawa State and the north of Nigeria. Her strong showing in the 2023 gubernatorial election against incumbent Governor Ahmadu Fintiri is expected to significantly influence political alignments in the state as preparations for 2027 intensify.
Her defection provides a boost to the NDC’s expansion plans, as the relatively new party seeks to establish itself as a viable national alternative, attracting experienced politicians and building grassroots support across the country.
