A three-day intensive masterclass on upstream and offshore energy insurance is set to take place in Lagos from July 27th to 29th 2026, bringing together two of the industry’s most respected figures.
The programme, organised by Brickred Consult Limited in collaboration with the West African Insurance Companies Association (WAICA), will be held at the NIA Towers on Saka Tinubu Street, Victoria Island.
David Sharp, a globally recognised authority on oil and gas insurance and author of a leading textbook on upstream and offshore energy insurance, will co-facilitate the masterclass alongside Dr. Dan Okehi, an experienced insurance and risk management professional.
The event is designed for a wide cross-section of the energy and insurance value chain, including oil and gas companies, insurers and reinsurers, insurance brokers, loss adjusters, energy lawyers, the Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board (NCDMB), regulators, and risk managers.
The curriculum will centre on gaining a practical understanding of the risks inherent in energy exploration. Participants will examine what underwriters typically insure during drilling operations, reservoir penetration activities, and the drilling circulation system.
Sessions will also cover the causes of kicks and blowouts, operators’ extra expense coverage, and the evolution of the Energy Exploration and Development (EED 8/88) policy wordings.
A significant portion of the programme will be dedicated to understanding how underwriters structure and evaluate Control of Well Insurance (Sections A, B, and C), including drilling extra expenses, seepage and pollution, clean-up and contamination liabilities, and key risk considerations, premium rating methods, and underwriting factors.
According to the organisers, participants will be equipped to assess energy risks more effectively and to interpret the conditions and clauses of applicable insurance policies.
The masterclass will also provide a clear overview of Floating Production Storage and Offloading (FPSO) vessel functions and components, the management of Subsea, Umbilical, Risers, and Flowlines (SURF) in offshore operations, and the risks associated with LNG pipelines and tankers, including hull and liability exposures.
