Haunting Image Of 27 Coffins Is A Profound Indictment Of A Nation Desensitised To Mass Killings – Ejiofor

Social critic, Sir Ifeanyi Ejiofor (Esq.), has lamented that the image of 27 coffins arranged in mournful silence is not merely a photograph, but a profound indictment of a nation becoming desensitised to recurring mass killings.

He posited that the blood of innocent Nigerians should awaken the national conscience rather than merely stirring temporary emotions.

In a statement titled ‘The escalating tide of genocidal atrocities: The mass burial of 27 victims of Jihadist terror as Nigeria’s conscience stands trial’, Ejiofor noted that this is a chilling reminder that, beyond political rhetoric, a tragic reality persists.

“History teaches us that genocide often begins with the normalisation of repeated atrocities and collective silence,” Ejiofor stated. “Rwanda did not descend into catastrophe overnight, and Bosnia’s darkest chapters were preceded by ignored warnings. Nigeria must resist travelling that perilous path.”

He further remarked, “One cannot view those rows of coffins without concluding that Nigeria is embroiled in a severe security crisis. Whether characterised as terrorism, insurgency, or criminality, the undeniable reality is that innocent lives continue to be lost on a scale that should provoke sustained outrage.”

Ejiofor criticised the “national amnesia” where tragedies are quickly overshadowed by political calculations surrounding the 2027 general elections. He also condemned the online bullying of Catholic Bishops who recently visited the Presidency, noting, “The prophetic responsibility of religious leaders is not to flatter those in authority but to speak truth with courage. Constructive criticism is an indispensable safeguard of democracy.”

Ejiofor concluded by calling for urgent, decisive action: “National security must once again become the state’s foremost priority. Nigeria owes its citizens not just condolences, but the unwavering protection every sovereign nation is duty-bound to provide.”
