Ahead of the 81st United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) scheduled for 14–28 September 2026, the Biafra Independence Movement/Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra (BIM-MASSOB) has reminded the United Nations that the 1914 amalgamation of Northern and Southern Nigeria was a failure and lacked divine blessing.
BIM-MASSOB claims that the amalgamation, which reached its centenary on 1 January 2014, was not conducted in good faith. They argue this is why Nigeria has failed to progress 66 years after its independence on 1 October 1960.
In a statement signed by the Director of Information and Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Mazi Chris Mocha, the group maintained that current insecurity in Nigeria is a manifestation of divine displeasure.
The statement challenged the United Nations, asserting that the only solution to Nigeria’s instability is to grant independence to its six geopolitical zones to effectively disarm terrorists.
BIM-MASSOB, led by Chief Ralph Uwazuruike, gave assurances that the assets of citizens across all six zones—South East, South West, South-South, North Central, North East, and North West—would be protected under international law, with bilateral agreements governing the future relationships between the new republics.
The group renewed its plea for Abuja politicians to “relieve Nigerians of the burden of the current system” and allow their people self-determination.
