The Campaign for Democracy (CD) and the Human Rights Liberty Access and Peace Defenders’ Foundation (HURIDE) have urged Governor Chukwuma Soludo of Anambra State to urgently extend palliative road repairs across the Onitsha urban metropolis to ensure the free flow of traffic in the commercial city.
In a press statement issued on Tuesday, the Chairman of CD in the South-East and Executive Director of HURIDE, Dede Uzor A. Uzor, stated that the only way to alleviate the suffering of the masses in the state is by establishing an aggressive road maintenance culture across all areas, with particular emphasis on Onitsha.
He highlighted several key thoroughfares requiring urgent attention, including Uga Street, Arondizuogu Street, Port Harcourt Road, Orlu Street, Modebe Avenue, Oguta Road, Awka Road, Old Market Road, Ridge Road (GRA), Mbonu Ojike Street, Limca Road, and other strategic routes within the city.
According to the statement: “Soludo should direct his attention to road infrastructure. Such interventions must be timely to alleviate the hardship faced by ordinary citizens.”
CD and HURIDE nevertheless commended Governor Soludo for his efforts regarding the state’s broader road network—notably the dualisation of the Agulu–Nnobi–Nnewi road and the Nnobi–Igboukwu–Ekwulobia–Oko–Ufuma–Ajalli–Umunze axis. They urged him not to relent, particularly in a cosmopolitan city like Onitsha, which generates substantial internal revenue due to its dense population.
