AWKA – Peter Obi, the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate for the 2027 general election, has underscored the necessity of “purposeful representation” as a blueprint for national development.
Speaking in Awka, Anambra State, during an empowerment programme hosted by Professor Lilian Orogbu, the legislator representing the Awka North and South Federal Constituency, Mr Obi lauded the initiative, which saw the distribution of essential tools including tricycles, motorcycles, vehicles, and various agricultural and commercial equipment.
Mr Obi emphasised that such interventions should not be viewed merely as acts of charity, but as strategic investments in self-reliance.
“What I saw was remarkable: tools for creating livelihoods, strengthening families, and promoting self-reliance,” the former governor remarked.
He further highlighted Professor Orogbu’s tenure as a template for effective governance, noting that her focus on education, infrastructure, and human development serves as a practical demonstration of public service.
“Whenever she invites me to an event, it is almost invariably to commission a school, inspect a road, support a scholarship initiative, or participate in a project that directly benefits the people,” he observed.
Mr Obi suggested that the legislator’s performance during her first term in the National Assembly set a high benchmark, expressing confidence that her continued tenure would yield even greater impact.
Reflecting on the broader political climate, Mr Obi reiterated his stance that Nigeria’s progress is contingent upon a shift in political culture.
“Nigeria will progress when public office becomes less about what leaders receive and more about what they give back to the people,” he stated.
Closing his remarks with his trademark optimism, the NDC candidate maintained that with a commitment to service and clear, focused leadership, the realisation of a “new Nigeria” remains firmly within reach.
